Fertility

Acupuncture has been used for many centuries to improve overall well-being, and a healthier body has a greater chance of conceiving naturally. As well as improving general health, acupuncture can be used to treat specific conditions which impede fertility.

Infertility can affect nearly every aspect of a person’s life. Few situations in life are as challenging and overwhelming. The emotional aspects of infertility often go ignored and untreated, and because it is such a private issue, many couples do not share their experiences which can add to the problem. Aoife has worked extensively with both women and men to improve their fertility and help them conceive. Whether alongside Western medicine or naturopathic medicine, acupuncture can support a woman and man in their endeavour to conceive.

Acupunctue

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient system of Healing. It is officially recognized by The World Health Organization.

Acupuncture treatment involves inserting hair thin sterilized needles into predetermined points along the body. There are over 300 acupuncture points in the body. All of these points are connected to meridians of energy. Imagine channels of energy that flow from your fingertips up through your arms or from your toes up through your legs. These channels connect to different organs in the body. When the acupuncture needles are inserted, they have a profound effect on the channels of energy in the body and their respective organs.

Acupuncture forms part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM originated over 3000 years ago in China. The ancient TCM doctors observed how nature moves, how illness manifests and develops.

Acupuncturists endeavour to diagnose the root cause of disease in a patient. They will look at the overall symptoms and determine where the client’s individual imbalance lies and what is underneath this pattern of disharmony. They will then treat the symptoms of disease as well as the root cause with the aim of redressing overall health and well-being.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very different from the needles in your doctor’s room. The needles are very fine and as thin as human hair. Most insertions are just beneath the skin’s surface and the sensations vary from person to person. You may feel nothing at all or perhaps an instant pinch, which almost immediately recedes. Most patients find the treatments relaxing and many fall asleep during the treatment.

Who can benefit from acupuncture?

Acupuncture can help people of all ages and stages of life. Many people get acupuncture to optimise health and prevent disease.

Can acupuncture help my condition?

It is best to consult with your acupuncture practitioner beforehand as they will be able to advise you directly.

What will my first visit be like?

Your first visit lasts about 1 hour. The first part of the session is spent going over your health/personal history, reviewing your present condition and any concerns you might have. This is done under complete confidentiality and helps to determine the current state of your health and how to best care for you. In addition to acupuncture needling, it is possible that other modalities such as cupping or tuina massage may be used. A complete treatment plan and expected outcomes will be explained on the first visit.

Subsequent sessions start with a brief interview where you have the chance to provide feedback on your last treatment. If you can, plan your activities so that after each treatment you can relax and allow maximum benefit from the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on the nature of the complaint, its severity and how long it has been present.

What should I bring during my first visit?

Please bring any medical results from other facilities you may already have if they are relevant to your condition. Bring also with you a list of all current medication and/or supplements you take.

Will my health insurance policy cover acupuncture treatment?

Some insurance companies will pay for acupuncture treatment. Because each insurance provider has different restrictions, it is best to consult with your provider to determine if your treatment will be covered.
